The English Corner was held in the library at 6 p.m. on April 17th, 2013. The drizzling rain didn’t stop the students from joining in the English Corner, as the library lobby was full of students before 6 p.m. The overseas teachers were Mr. Martin Stannard, Mr. Charlie Reis, Dr. Phillip Stevenson, Miss Amy Van Gundy, Ms. Linda Visner and Ms. Sara Tillman.
Mr. Charlie Reis and the students talked about a wide range of topics, and his humor made everyone happy. At first, he let the students introduce themselves to each other. Then they talked about the Chinese writer, and the students recommended a famous writer, Lin Yutang, to him. Mr.Charlie Reis said he didn’t know the writer, but he would try to read his works, as he thought that by reading translated version of Chinese literature he could learn more about China. Moreover, Mr. Charlie Reis also discussed dreams with the students. He thinks that he felt free and relaxed when talking with students in English Corner.
At the same time, there was a girl who wanted to invite Dr. Phillip Stevenson to dance, which raised a discussion of dancing. Dr. Phillip Stevenson told the students about the tap dance, and students introduced the traditional Chinese art of Cantonese opera to him.
In addition, Ms. Sara Tillman and the students talked about the campus shooting which happened in Boston. She felt very sad and considered the gun should be banned so as to stop the same tragedy.
The library was filled with warmth and happiness, and the teachers and students got more familiar with each other through the English Corner.
