The English corner this week was held on 5th of December at 6 p.m. in the library. The cold weather didn’t reduce students’ enthusiasm. The present overseas teachers were Mr. Christopher Dockstader, Mr. Leck Wall and Mrs. Linda Jean Visner.
This time, Mr. Leck Wall and students discussed a special topic -- marriage. He told students that there were many reasons for a couple to get married. Some people get married because of love, while some people do that for money. He also introduced the American families’ living habits to the students, and shared the opinion about the difference between Chinese and Western marriage. For example, the Chinese women take the employment and property seriously, while the Westerners cherish the quality of life. The marriage for Chinese means to build up a family and support their parents. However, for the westernerss it is all about feeling and affection. And the Chinese consider men should raise money, while women take care of their home, which is a big difference from the Westerners who advocate the equality between men and women. Regarding the family views and social phenomena, they had a further discussion, which helped the students know western culture from the details.
The topic today is related to the social life, which showed the consideration and exploration of students towards a social issue. They have learned a lot by communicating with overseas teachers.
