演讲内容简介:
English Vowel Length
Though not generally recognized by English language teachers, English vowels may be either long or short, and regular length alternation plays an important role in English inflectional morphology, English derivational morphology, and in the pronunciation of modern English words.
English Derivational Doublets
Since English has borrowed words from many languages, in particular from related languages such as Latin and French, English has many doublets where the members are related by rule, thus allowing us to rapidly expand our vocabulary, once the rules are recognized. A further consequence of these relationships is that the much denigrated English orthography, like Chinese, is not phonetic, but rather morphological, reflecting not sounds, but rather morphological relationships.
