Franka Kermer was awarded her PhD in English Language and Culture by the University of Eastern Finland in 2015. Her field of specialisation is Cognitive Linguistics and its applicability to L2 teaching and learning. She has worked as a researcher and teacher at university level for six years.

The purpose of this talk is to bring together various theories and approaches dealing with the aspects of foreign language learning and bilingualism. The lecture will offer a general overview of foreign language acquisition theories, how they are developed and how they influence foreign language learning. We will also look at factors influencing success in foreign language learning as well as the benefits of learning a foreign language.
