Mr. Darren Mullins
Darren Mullins is from the United States of America and moved to Asia in 2004 because he “wanted to try something different. A graduate of Shawnee State University in Ohio with a major in Social Science, Darren has been teaching for over ten years in the USA, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and now mainland China. Teaching in various universities, kindergartens and private and public schools, Darren has over seven years of experience teaching English in Asia. In 2011, Darren finally took and completed a TESOL course after teaching English in Asia for more than six years. During Darren’s time studying at Shawnee State, Darren was on the Dean’s List several times and took several elementary education courses while studying. Before coming to Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai, Darren worked for one year at a Kindergarten in Hong Kong and taught for three years at universities and two years at a private school in South Korea and did a stint at a public school in Japan. In short, Darren has taught students ranging in age from very young children (some as young as two years old) all the way up to adults.
As a teacher, Darren brings not only ten years’ worth of experience to the classroom, he also brings musical talent as well. From playing the guitar and performing in public for more than twenty years, Darren has a wealth of English songs to teach ESL students and has even scored some significant radio airplay with an original song called The Days Of You And Me as well as a couple of early rock and roll songs that he covered. Darren also utilizes many games and role play activities for use in the classroom. Darren’s philosophy in regards to education is that different teaching methods need to be used as different students learn in different ways.
During Darren’s time in Asia, Darren has met many people from around the world and stays in touch with many of them to this day. Darren’s favorite hobby is riding roller coasters and Darren has traveled to many different countries to ride roller coasters and visit amusement parks as he says it is a good way to meet the local people and interact with them. The thing Darren likes best about teaching in Asia is the chance to see other countries and to meet the residents of each country. Future plans call for Darren to spend a few years teaching in China and possibly settling in China for good. After taking a vacation to Beijing in 2009, Darren knew he wanted to look into living in China and moved to Hong Kong less than nine months later to live and work and finds China to be an interesting place to live.
