Ms. Sara Guimaraes
I''''m Portuguese, from north-west of Portugal. I was born and grew up in a small fishing village bathed by the cold Atlantic ocean where the intense smell of seaweed, the squawk of seagulls and the maritime fog it''''s the scenario.
I obtained my honours degree in Teaching Portuguese in 2008 by the University of Minho, Portugal and after one year of internship I couldn''''t resist the invitation to teach in China.
During two years, as support lecturer of Camões Institute of Portugal and Confucius Institute of University of Minho, I taught Portuguese Language and Culture to undergraduate level students at Chinese universities such as Tianjin Foreign Studies University and University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.
After that period in China I return to Portugal to depth my own knowledge of how Portuguese as a Foreign and Second Language it''''s acquired, so I decided on taking a master degree at the University of Minho.
Since I was back from China I began teaching Portuguese in public schools as first language and Portuguese language for foreigners in private schools. In 2014 the invitation of Polytechnic Institute of Bragança brought me again to the “Middle Kingdom”, this time to the warm south.
As a lecturer of Portuguese I have a wide range of interests that include methodology, pedagogy as well post-colonial literature of African Portuguese-speaking countries.
My teaching experience has shaped and been shaped by my research interests. For the past five years, guided by a pragmatic approach I don''''t overlook the importance of intercultural communicative competence in my daily professional performance, thus I am committed to an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and all of my courses are structured with this in mind. Therefore my work experiences have enabled me to develop not only specific skills in teaching Portuguese, but also to deepen intercultural interaction.
I was always able to engage my students and lead them in the learning of more than the language itself as a tool of communication; bringing depth to my lessons and discussions. I''''m able to engage each student individually, thus being able to support their personal needs and development.
I believe I''''m a knowledgeable and reliable teacher and I can be a worthy team player in School of Foreign Languages. On this cozy and verdant campus I feel well welcome and I''''m looking forward to start over Chinese language lessons.
