At 7 p.m. on October 21st, Mr. Dave Jaye held a lecture entitled “Western and Asian Culture Comparison” in Leyu C102, which was the fourth lecture given by overseas teachers of SFL this semester. In addition to around 60 students of SFL and 100 students of other schools, Dr. Phillip Stevenson, Dr. Matthew Conduct, Dr. Richard Stopford, Mr. Brian Harrison, Mr. Gerard Brent, Mr. Andrew Engler, Mr. Neville Swartz, Mr. Brett Gearing and Associate Professor Li Fusheng also attended the lecture.
At the beginning, Mr. Dave Jaye introduced the development of western culture from ancient Greek to modern times. Furthermore, by showing pictures, he compared the differences between Western and Asian cultures, such as the attitudes toward time, aesthetic standards, interpersonal relationship as well as mode of thinking. He suggested people be open and tolerate the differences so as to understand each other. Then, he used caricatures to show some bad habits in different cultural backgrounds. At the end of the lecture, he said some of the Chinese cultural traditions could be seen on the campus of BNUZ.
The lecture not only made students learn the differences between the West and Asia, but also helped them to understand cultures of other countries.
