On the evening of June 6th, Mr. Gerard Brent, an overseas teacher from the School of Foreign Languages, held the twelfth Movie Night of this semester in Liyun A107. He showed the movie The Full Monty to the students.
Mr. Gerard Brent first introduced students to the relevant background of the movie. Sheffield in England, once the "City of Steel", is the home of massive steel industry. With the industry in decline and the steelworks closed down, in the late 1980s, there was a widespread unemployment and despair in the whole city.
The Full Monty is about a group of unemployed steel workers in England. Being out of work, Gaz was living on the dole and about to lose his son because he couldn’t pay for the child-support payment. After stumbling across a dance club and seeing how many women are crazy about the male exotic dancing, Gaz and his friend, Dave decided to form their own crew of male strippers. On their way they picked up the suicidal Lomper and managed to persuade Gerald to be their choreographer. With a series of struggle, the unlikely guys pulled together, adding Horse and Guy to the line-up. When practicing for the big night, however, they were arrested by the police and hit the headlines. Surprisingly, it turned out that about 400 people were attracted by the report to pay for the performance. Along with the cheers and applause, they went the full monty and regained a renewed sense of purpose and the confidence to face the real life.
At last, the students shared their various opinions about the movie with Mr. Gerard Brent. Many students appreciated that harsh reality comes in the form of comedy. And Mr. Gerard Brent told them the setting in details as well.
