At 6 p.m. on October 24th, English Corner was held as usual. But the location has been moved to a café called Town No.1 in Haihua area since this week. Today’s topic was whether university study should focus more on theories or practice. The overseas teachers in this English Corner included Mr. Brian Harrison, Mr. Sean McHugh, Mr. Andrew Chun and Mr. Leck Wall.
All the teachers and students sat around the table chatting happily. Mr. Andrew Chun and Mr. Brian Harrison expressed their opinions on the topic and asked the students about their objectives. Some of them wanted to be translators, while some wanted to be teachers. Mr. Chun and Mr. Harrison said students could decide whether to do more practice or not based on their objectives. For instance, those whose goals are being teachers could try to volunteer teaching or seek for part-time job as tutors during holidays. And then, the students asked whether the overseas teachers knew anything about Chinese history, which made the discussion even more heated. They mentioned many ancient figures like ceramic horses and famous ancient dynasties such as Han Dynasty. At the same time, Mr. Sean McHugh and students were sharing their favorite films and movie stars. He said that university study would not barely be accomplished by reading books and participating in practical activities and that hobbies and interest sometimes could also be an efficient way to study. His humorous way of speaking made students burst into laughter, and everyone was impressed by his rich experience.
English Corner is a place where you can express your ideas freely and improve your English. With a wide range of topics every week, it will be even more fun. So don’t hesitate to come and join us!
