演讲人:Ms. Tiffany May
Tiffany studied at the prestigious Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and completed a BA in English literature and linguistics. Subsequently, she completed an MA with distinction in TESOL and Applied Linguistics. During this program, she was selected for the dean’s list and got the chance to publish her thesis. She is especially interested in World Englishes, academic writing, research methods and critique and historiography.
演讲内容简介:Ms. Tiffany May will be presenting the basic concepts of World Englishes. The term World Englishes refers to emerging and indigenized varieties of English that has developed in regions influenced by the US or UK. The presentation will explore in breadth the following topics: Kachru’s three circle model of World Englishes, and ideas of Linguistic imperialism, the global spread of English, the pros and cons of the internationalization of English worldwide (such as variations, prejudice and standard/non-standard English), exploring varieties of Englishes around the world, and finally discussion questions for students to consider regarding the functions and status of English in mainland China and perhaps Hong Kong.
