Mr. Sean McHugh
I’m British, from south-central England and delighted to be working and living here at this fine university in such a beautiful natural environment and climate, one of the most livable parts not only of China but the world.I recently studied at Edinburgh and Lancaster universities for a doctorate degree in music and religion, looking at musical minimalism and Indian philosophy but I’m breaking from this with my present work at BNUZ. I have a diploma in international studies with a dissertation on human rights in the West and East Asia from Birmingham university, a masters in music with a dissertation on the aesthetics of Kant and Hegel from Sussex university, and a bachelors in philosophy with a dissertation on the self from Wolverhampton university.I’ve previously taught in China for a year in Shandong and travelled in China twice as a tourist; a few years ago I also taught in South Korea, as well as in England with a range of subjects at secondary schools and music history at a university. In the past I’ve been a construction company manager dealing with marketing and sales, measuring and pricing enquiries and multiple contract organization; I’ve further done professional coach driving including taking students to France and a number of other minor roles. My interests include Indian philosophy and I’m writing an analysis of the relations of its core ideas to areas of Western thought including cultural theory, postmodernism, democracy, psychology, sexuality, ethics, aesthetics, mythology, religion, art, Wagner, harmony, minimalism, the media, film, Einstein, learning and academia; I enjoy working with English and maintain idioms and lexicon files. I’m familiar with 4000 hours of art music by 1200 composers across all periods and genres including 430 operas.I’ve travelled independently in 86 countries many several times, in north, south, east, west and central Africa, north and south America, east and west Europe, the Middle East, north, south, east, central and southeast Asia, and Australia; I’m a keen travel writer and also hold expedition planning, first aid and vehicle maintenance certificates. I derive much from conversation, history, politics, astronomy, public speaking, fitness, Hinduism and meditation; I have an Irish name and parts of my family are from Ireland.I’m most interested in Asian and African cultures and ways of life, the West indeed having far from all the answers in social organization. I disagree with Western democracy’s principle of majority rule, the masses’ popular culture having damaged higher values in what was my society; I argue for Chinese top-down not bottom-up democracy, maintaining standards of value and providing for such a successful government.
